1. prominent a. 突出的, 杰出的=distinguished

He is a prominent teacher in this school.

他是这所学校里表现突出的老师。

2. prone to a. 易于

除了prone,还可表示“倾向……”“易于……”的词还有apt、likely等。

 prone 多指人,着重指其本性,或倾向于某种错误、弱点或不良行为。

 likely 侧重可能性,用于指将来,预言好的或者不好的结果。

 apt 多用于口语,指自然或习惯性的倾向。

The kid is prone to crying.

那个小孩很容易哭。

3. prosperity n. 繁荣

borrowed prosperity 虚假繁荣   business prosperity 商业繁荣

形容词形式prosperous。

It seems that the new government isn't able to bring along a period of prosperity.

新政府似乎没能给经济带来繁荣。

4. preach v. 说教;讲道,布道

preach to sb. about /against /on sth.  (在教堂中)讲经,布道

preach sth. to sb.  ①宣扬(教义或教条);②教导某事物;③唠叨的说教

His father often goes to church to preach to people on Sundays.

他的父亲经常周末去教堂布道。

She hates her mother preaches to her all the day.

她讨厌她妈妈整天唠唠叨叨。

5. punctual a. 守时的

He is a punctual man.

他是个守时的人。

6. propel v. 推动

propel 表示驱动,推动;促使,而push则是普通用词,使用比较广泛。

He used a paddle to propel the boat.

他划桨推动小船前进。

7. pledge n. 保证;抵押品;典当物

I believed her pledge that she will never reveal this secret.

我相信了她绝不说出这个秘密的保证。

8. promising a. 有希望的;有前途的;有出息的

He is supposed to be a promising violinist.

大家都认为他会成为一个有前途的小提琴家。

9. publicity n. 公众的注意

publicity agent 宣传员   give publicity to  公布,宣布

Her screaming arouse the publicity.

她的尖叫引起了公众的注意。

10. prompt a. 迅速的  

除了作形容词使用,prompt还可作动词,表示激起;推动;提示,也可作名词表示提示;提示的内容。

Do you know what prompts him to be so nervous?
