"I am a member of the ABS crew, which means "Around the Bohai Sea," because all of us are from cities around the Bohai Sea. I started doing graffiti in 2005. When I paint, I go by the name ANDC, and my themes include radiation symbols with red letters and a green background. The contrast between the two colors reflects the hazard brought about by radioactive contamination."

Graffiti artists normally work at night when they engage in such things as "tagging" or "bombing." The art form comes with a certain amount of legal risk, which makes it more intriguing than other forms of painting.

In China, few people understand what the graffiti really means; therefore no related laws have been established yet. Without legal provisions, we are usually set free after being caught.

The graffiti crews in Beijing do not entirely consist of Chinese people. Some crews have members from other countries.

Aigor is a graffiti artist from Europe who lives in Beijing. Of course, Aigor is not his real name, but it's the name he uses when he "writes."

"In my city, it is more common to find graffiti in the streets. When I was a kid, I felt emotional about graffiti and so from this I make my graffiti and I cannot stop."

Just because graffiti art is new to China doesn't mean Chinese artists are any less skilled than their European or American counterparts. Aigor understands the differences between Chinese and foreign graffiti artists.

"I think they have an incredible style. Because before when I was painting for five years my graffiti was not very good and I knew many writers for five or six years, and they are very good writers, but I think it's not the same way like Europe or America, because in America the graffiti is more of a message about society, but here I think the Chinese writers paint because they feel their art. They feel differently about graffiti than European people."

Touch is an artist from Shenzhen. He has been a graffiti artist for four years.

"I write as Touch here and this is my work. As you see I represent KB crew and Chips crew here in China. I've been writing graffiti four years."

He explains how he writes his name and his style.

"I hope more and more teenagers will take part in what we are doing."

During CRI's visit to the arts festival, Andy gave the CRI crew a demonstration of his "writing" skills.
