The cub weighed a very tiny 218 grams but this is apparently heavy in panda terms.

Zookeepers hope to slowly train pandas to reduce their dependency on humans in the semi-wild training base.

About 1 600 pandas live in the wild, while more than 300 pandas are raised in captivity in China.

Wolong Nature Reserve

Sixty-seven captive pandas are among 150 pandas in Wolong Panda Reserve managed by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base

WWF(World Wide Fund for Nature)

WWF(World Wide Fund for Nature)

The World Wide Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment.

It is the world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, covering 90 countries, supporting around 1300 conservation and environmental projects around the world. It is a charity, with approximately 60% of its funding coming from voluntary donations by private individuals.

The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment". Currently, much of its work focuses on forests, fresh water ecosystems, and oceans and coasts. Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species, pollution and climate change.

Wolong National Natural Reserve

Wolong National Nature Reserve is a protected area located in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, China. Begun in 1963, Wolong National Natural Reserve is the earliest, largest and best-known panda reserve in China. The reserve is also a home to many other endangered species including: red pandas, golden monkeys, white-lipped deer and many precious plants.

Sixty-seven captive pandas are among 150 pandas in Wolong Panda Reserve managed by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The Center was founded in 1980 with assistance from World Wildlife Fund.

Wild Training for Captive Pandas   (from China Daily)

YA'AN, Sichuan - Experts have started to give captive giant pandas training on how to survive in the wild to improve their chances of survival when they are relocated. So far, no panda bred in captivity has survived being relocated.

This includes teaching pandas how to seek food and to recognize their natural enemies' sounds and smells, the Chengdu Daily newspaper reported recently. The World Wildlife Fund says the panda's natural enemies are leopards and jackals.

Captive-bred Panda Gives Birth in Almost-wild Fields

CHENGDU - A giant panda gave birth Tuesday to a male cub in a semi-wild training base in Southwest China. This marked the first time a captive-bred panda delivered a cub in a near-wild environment.

Cao Cao, the giant panda, gave birth without assistance early Tuesday morning in camera-monitored fields in Hetaoping, Wolong, the panda’s hometown in Southwest China’s Sichuan province
