About 800 clowns have converged on Mexico City, not only for fun, but with a serious objective, to gain support and respect for their art. It's a major issue under discussion at the annual International Clowns' Convention.

Clowns gathered to showcase their talents, swap ideas, and pick up new skills. This year, they will try to break a 10 minute record for laughing.

Chocolatin, Dominican Republic clown, said, "To make people laugh. It's found within us. At the moment, there is a lot of sadness, people have problems and there are tensions in this world. The most beautiful thing is to make people laugh. Making other people smile makes us happy."

The clowns will take part in seminars and workshops designed to enable clowns to stock up on the latest and best costumes, shoes, make-up, magic tricks and wigs available in the industry.

Clowns are very important to Mexican culture and life. Thousands pop up on traffic intersections and perform all kinds of tricks to earn a few pesos.

It's a tough life for them, but this convention tries to maintain high standards of clowning.

Clowns gathered to showcase their talents, swap ideas, and pick up new skills. This year, they will try to break a 10 minute record for laughing.

Carlota Lota, Salvadoran clown, said, "All humans from this planet should wake up with a smile to have more energy and happiness and forget a little bit about everything that exists. So remember you have to smile and smile and smile a lot, a lot, a lot. So, everyone smile."

According to the Latin-American Clown Association there are some 10,000 professional clowns in Mexico, of which 3,000 are women.
