On September 12th, 1977, Steve Biko died in South Africa.

September 12th, 1977, the suspect death of activist Steve Biko while serving a detention term in Pretoria, deepens the resolve of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa. The Minister of Justice claims Biko died from a hunger strike, but a post-mortem reveals severe brain damage and other indicators of physical abuse as the more probable cause. From this point in time in South Africa, September 12th will honor those, who like Steve Biko have given up their lives in the long, painful struggle against apartheid.
