September 2, 1945 - Japan Surrenders.

The war in the Pacific officially ended shortly after the Allied Fleet sailed into Tokyo Bay - to begin a seven year occupation of Japan. On September 2, 1945 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, a mass of correspondents jammed the decks with Allied officers in British, Australian, Dutch, French, Chinese, Russian and American uniforms. Though Americans had already celebrated VJ Day, for victory over Japan on August 15th, the unconditional surrender document changed history beyond the hopes of many statesmen. Said General Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of the Allied Occupation forces, "It is my earnest hope, that from this solemn occasion, a better world will emerge, a world dedicated to the dignity of man".
