This Day in History - Aug 22nd Starring - America's Cup

For 132 years, the America's Cup remained, all American. England's Sir Thomas Lipton lost all five of his challenges, indeed 24 consecutive challenges failed. The Cup was first won in 1851 when the schooner America handily defeated 14 vessels, in the British Royal Yacht Squadron Races, as part of the first World's Fair. The owners of the America deeded the Cup to the New York Yacht Club on condition that it be placed forever in international competition. Originally, larger yachts, schooners, sloops and cutters competed with professional crews. Challenges were made by the British and later the French and Australians. In 1983, Australia ended America's 132-year reign.
