This is AP News Minute.

Elena Kagan will join President Barack Obama at the White House Friday to mark her confirmation as the nation’s 112th justice. Kagan was confirmed yesterday. Tomorrow she will be sworn in at the Supreme Court by Chief Justice John Roberts. She will formally be installed as a justice October 1 when the court’s new term starts.

One of the president’s top economic advisers has announced she is resigning. Christina Romer, who heads the Council of Economic Advisers, said her resignation is effective September 3rd. She will return to California where she is an economics professor at the University of California, Berkley.

BP says engineers have finished plugging the blown-out Gulf of Mexico oil well with cement. Crews must now wait at least a day for the cement to dry. BP continues to dig two relief wells which will ultimately shut off the flow of oil.

Thousands remain without power after a strong line of thunderstorms roll through the Washington DC area on Thursday. The storm uprooted trees and pulled down power lines. Power Company said it could be several days until everyone gets their electricity back.
