On August 13, 1899 - Sir Alfred Hitchcock was born in London.

The macabre master of movie making, Alfred Hitchcock made a secondary career of cameo appearances in many of the 80 films he directed. In The Lodger, Hitchcock merely served as an extra to fill the screen. Cameo appearances then followed as a superstition and later as a running gag that kept audiences paying strict attention to catch him. Such cleverness even found a way with six characters stranded at sea in Lifeboat, as he appeared in a before and after magazine ad. Sir Alfred states: “I do it as early as I can, because I'm told, I don't know this, I'm told, that an audience looks out for me. But I have another reason. I get in and out as quickly as I can, so that I don't have to suffer the indignity of being an actor too long“.
