A federal judge has blocked the most controversial parts of Arizona’s new immigration law, a halt includes a provision of requiring local officer to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws. The judge also put on hold a part of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times.

Wildfires have destroyed dozens of homes and forced evacuations near California’s Mojave Desert. Two fires broke out just outside Bakersfield and spread quickly. One has already covered more than 15,000 acres. High winds and thick brush have fueled the blazes, more than 200 fire fighters are on the scene.

A passenger jet crashed in the hills outside Pakistan’s capital. The plane carrying 152 people went down near Islamabad in heavy rain and thick clouds. The Airblue jet’s crash was the deadliest ever in Pakistan. At least two American citizens were on the plane.

There’s no more “Ale” in Catalonia. Lawmakers in the Spanish region voted to ban bullfighting. Animal right activists had pushed the measure, but observers also believe the move fits with the area’s desire to be distinct from the rest of the country.
