Five people are dead following a house fire in Staten Island. Firefighters first got the call just after 4 a.m. It’s unclear how the blaze started while fire spokesman did not have any information about the victims’ ages or gender. The cause remains under investigation.

Crew members aboard dozens of ships in the Gulf of Mexico are preparing to evacuate as a tropical rain storm brews in the Caribbean. The rough weather is still hundreds of miles from the spill site. But officials have ordered technicians to stand down because they need several days to clear the area.

In the end, former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich did not tell jurors his side of the story. Blagojevich ended up listening to one of his defense attorneys who argued prosecutors had not proven their case. Blagojevich is on trial accused of trying to sell Barack Obama’s former Senate seat.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Vietnam marking the 15th anniversary of normalized U.S.-Vietnam relations. Clinton said that Vietnam has unlimited potential to become a great nation but should improve its human rights record. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister countered, saying human rights have common values but cultural and historical backgrounds also come into play.
