President Barack Obama says he will remember the late Senator Robert Byrd as a Senate icon, Democratic Party leader and elder statesman, but most of all, as a friend. Obama joined hundreds in the courtyard of West Virginia’s capital Friday to remember Byrd.

BP says it has some oil skimmers back out on the seas off the coasts of Alabama and Louisiana after rough condition churned up by Hurricane Alex kept them ashore. The lack of cleaning vessels combined with bad weather meant more oil was being pushed farther onto beaches along the Gulf of Mexico.

Prosecutors say two more suspects in an alleged Russian spy ring have admitted they are Russian citizens living in the U.S. under false identities. The pair were arrested in Arlington, Virginia, where they have been living as a married couple with two young children.

A New Hampshire man has been arrested for the 154th time. 49-year-old Paul Baldwin was nabbed Monday for allegedly stealing beer from a convenience store in Maine. He remains in jail.
