The US video game "Guitar Hero" franchise returns to its roots with metal-focused "Warriors of Rock," due out this fall.

The sixth title in the franchise that helped launch the music video game craze has Gene Simmons from the legendary band Kiss as its narrator and a renewed focus on ’80s-styled rock 'n' roll.

"So ‘Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock' is Neversoft's latest game. And it's really-we've kind of shifted gears. It's a totally focused game. We have Gene Simmons as the narrator. We have a new mode called Quest Mode. And in the quest, it's epic larger-than-life fantasy-based rock n' roll. So we drew inspiration from album covers from heavy metal throughout the '80s and other movies like ‘Heavy Metal' and things like that where it's just women on the back of a teradactyl with a spear." said Brian Bright, project director for game designer Neversoft.

Each individual character has a tightly-focused venue and music style and players must unlock the "warrior" version of each character in order to advance to the final battle against a beast that's taken the "demi-god of rock" captive.

It's an art and character style that echoes last year's Electronic Arts metal-themed game "Brutal Legend," starring Jack Black, which in turn echoed Neversoft's own "Guitar Hero 3."

"We kind of look back at ‘Guitar Hero 3' , which was the first ‘Guitar Hero' game that Neversoft produced. And it was essentially, you know, it was the God of Rock and Lou the Devil, and they were in this epic battle. And you were trying to help defeat Lou at the end with ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia' song," Bright said.

"And we had our Axel, and ‘Brutal Legend' comes along and they have their game. I think we both drew from the same influence," he said.

"We had done ‘World Tour' and we had done ‘Guitar Hero 5' and both of those we tried to cast a really wide net. We tried to please everybody," he added. "We had a wide variety of music, to please the metalhead and please the pop princess and please everybody in between. And I think we lost a little bit of the soul of what makes ‘Guitar Hero' cool, which is rock 'n' roll."

One thing that won't be returning in the new "Guitar Hero" is playable celebrity musicians.

Publisher Activision caught flak from fans and lawsuits from musicians for allowing players of "Guitar Hero 5" to control Cobain and others on songs that they wouldn't normally sing.

"We had Johnny Cash, we had Santana, we had Kurt Cobain, we had Shirley Manson (of Garbage), we had Matt Bellamy (of Muse). Everyone was cool with it," Bright said. "The fact that you could put them in precarious situations and make them sing songs that they wouldn't normally sing, maybe with Kurt it hit a little harder because that might've struck a nerve with that generation -- whereas with Johnny Cash who is arguably even a larger legend it didn't strike such a nerve because he's 20, 30 years previous generation, I don't know. I don't think you can win either way."

"Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" is due out in the fall for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii consoles.
