On June 10, 1980 - Nelson Mandela is released.
"There are many people who feel that it is useless and futile for us to continue talking peace and non-violence."
Police shootings like these in 1961 of anti-apartheid demonstrators in South Africa caused Nelson Mandela and his African National Congress to lose patience with 50 years of non-violent protest. In 1964, Mandela was jailed for life, but his writings, smuggled from prison continued to spark others.
"In fact his strategy is going to intensify as years go by and of course Mandela's wit it's all of the inspiration to our people"
The International community offered tributes and support but still he remained in prison. Finally, after 26 years of protest, Nelson Mandela was unconditionally released.
