On May 20, 1536 - Ann Boleyn gets her head chopped off in the tower of London.

Even today, it maintains a commanding position over the river Thames. The Tower of London was a fortress of palace, and above all, a royal prison. Ann Boleyn, mother of Queen Elisabeth I, was one of 2 wives of Henry VIII, executed in the tower. Charged with adultery, she was beheaded in 1536 along with 5 alleged lovers, one of whom was her brother. Sir Walter Raleigh imprisoned here for 13 years, wrote a history of the world before meeting the axe in 1618. In the 15th century, 2 princes were murdered within. Shakespeare reflecting common opinion made King Richard III the cutthroat, but modern scholars have their doubts. If there's one thing that British prefer to history, is intrigue and the bloody tower packs the full charge of both.
