On April 12，1961 - Yuri Gagarin.

April 12, 1961, Soviet Major Yuri Gagarin is the first man in space. The 26-year old industrial technician received unpublicized training before a Moscow radio station interrupted a program to announce emotionally that Russia has successfully launched a man into space. Gagarin is not only the first to pilot a spacecraft, but also the first to orbit the planet, accomplished in 89 minutes, before Vostok I returns to Russian soil. Some reports suggests secret test-piloted flights may have preceded Gagarin, but the world's first known cosmonaut is clearly now a national hero.
