This Day in History - March 20th Starring - Isabel Peron

Colonel Juan Peron, Argentina's provocative demi-god, evoked riots when jailed in 1945 for declaring himself a Presidential candidate. Peron was freed and then elected President via radio appeals by Eva Peron, who helped shape a program of state controlled social welfare. Evita championed labor and the poor, got women the vote and legalized divorce. Her early death caused tremendous mourning. Subsequent complaints of repression and a scrap with the Catholic Church, forced Peron into a 17 year exile in Spain. Then with his 3rd wife Isabel as running mate, Peron was re-elected in 1973. A year later following his death, Isabel succeeded Peron and was later jailed on charges of corruption.
