China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region shares a border with Vietnam. In its capital Nanning, a dozen young aspiring singers from China and Vietnam held a singing competition, to celebrate the friendship between the two countries.

Music is the universal language...

A Peking opera-inspired number by Chinese college sophmore Hua Ji wows a packed house. She also sings a Vietnamese ballad.

Her fellow contestant from Vietnam, sings a Chinese folk song. The authentic rendition touched many hearts.

6 contestants from China and Vietnam, entered the finale of the competition. Each sang 2 songs, one in Chinese, the other in Vietnamese.

The contestants teamed up and helped each other before the finale.

Hoang Viet Danh, Vietnamese Contestant, said, "I met Hua Ji at an ice-breaking party after I came to China. The Vietnamese song she chose for the competition happened to be one of my favorites, so I gave her some tips and she helped me with my Chinese song. She’s truly a lovely girl and a good friend."

Hua Ji and Hoang Viet Danh are among more than 10 thousand college students who auditioned for the competition. This year’s event was launched in May and caused an immediate sensation in Vietnam. More than a million viewers watched the live final show.

Hoang Vinh Bao, Director of VTC Digital Television, said, "I’m very happy to see that more and more young people are taking part in the competition. It’s a good sign. They are the future of both countries. Their participation means a lot to the friendship between China and Vietnam."

The competition was initiated in 2010, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of China-Vietnam ties. It was co-hosted by media groups from both countries, led by Vietnam’s VTC Digital Television and China Radio International. The annual event has become a bridge connecting the two peoples.

Wang Gengnian, President of China Radio International, said, "We have successfully held the competition for 3 years. It has proved to be a great platform for people of both countries, as China and Vietnam have a long tradition of friendship. I believe such people-to-people exchanges will benefit the traditional friendship between the two countries. "

Two contestants from both countries shared the top award. But trophies are not the only things they got. Each of them took home the beautiful songs they sang while leaving behind their big smiles!
