影片《天降美食》取材自夫妻档作家朱迪·巴雷特和朗·巴雷特在1982年出版的同名儿童小说，后由菲尔·罗德和克里斯·米勒改编搬上大银幕。第一部讲的是科学家弗林特为了解决地球的吃饭问题，成功地让大量的美食从天而降，但物极必反，食物太多反而酿成了巨灾。于是就自然而然构成了这第二部物极必反之后的故事。

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The film is the sequel to the 2009 film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which was loosely based on Judi and Ron Barrett's book of the same name. It is being directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, produced by Kirk Bodyfelt, and executive produced by the directors of the first film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Distributed by Columbia Pictures, the film is scheduled to be released on September 27, 2013.
