Kate Winslet's ‘Titanic’ Looks: Now and Then

She said she'd never let go, but Kate Winslet has certainly changed a few things since Titanic's epic media blitz in 1997: namely her hair color and sense of style.

For the Titanic 3D premiere at London's Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, the actress wowed in a custom Jenny Packham black silk crepe gown with Swarovski crystal cap sleeves and waist detail.

The sleek look is a big change from one of Winslet's first Titanic looks, the emerald-green Alexander McQueen for Givenchy gown she wore to the 1998 Oscars. Paired with a statement necklace and her wild red curls, it was one of her first major — and most memorable — red carpet moments.

“It was a white-knuckle ride for a year or two and then it all calmed down,” Winslet recently recalled to PEOPLE of those early years. “I do look back on that time and I wish that I had been a little better prepared, that someone had grabbed hold of me and said, ‘Listen, wake up — your life is going to change.’ I had great support — an agent, publicist, friends, all that stuff — but no one knew what was going to happen.”

Winslet’s certainly come a long way on the red carpet, though her gorgeous figure and critically acclaimed acting skills haven’t changed much at all.
