Some thought the fourth-quarter play Saturday on which Cleveland’s Shaquille O’Neal sent Boston’s Rajon Rondo sprawl-ing to the court’s floor in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series constituted a flagrant foul. So it was odd when Cavaliers Coach Mike Brown acknowledged that he sent tape of the foul to N.B.A. head-quarters for clarification.

But Brown said he did not think it was a flagrant foul. He did not think it was a foul at all.

“We haven’t gotten a response yet,” Brown said. “But I didn’t think that was a foul. He jumped straight up in the air. He blocked the shot, and Rondo’s shot was a one-foot floater. So Rondo’s one-foot floater carried him into Shaq."

But just like when we go to the hole, we expect to be challenged and sometimes get hit. I think it’s all a part of the game.”

O’Neal was assessed a personal foul on the play. Rondo shot two free throws, missing the first. That was the last of Rondo’s 27 points in the game, although he did not credit O’Neal with stopping his run in the Cavaliers’ 101-93 victory.

“It’s not him,” Rondo said. “It’s the floor.”
