When James Levine cancelled a slew of performances last May, citing continuing problems with his back, it seemed that the twilight of his epoch-making directorship of the Metropolitan Opera was at hand. I gave a blog post the title “An era ending?” and wondered to myself whether the question mark was needed.

Over the summer, though, Levine’s condition reportedly improved, in the wake of an apparently successful surgery, and he was expected to begin rehearsals for the 2011-12 season today. Had the iconic maestro rallied? Sadly, a press release from the Met this morning announced that, while on vacation in Vermont last week, Levine had fallen and injured his back again, necessitating an emergency procedure.

He has cancelled all appearances for the fall. Fabio Luisi, who has obtained lucid, vibrant performances in recent outings at the Met, will take up most of Levine’s duties, including the opening nights of “Don Giovanni,” on October 13th, and of “Siegfried,” on October 27th. More important, the Met has finally acknowledged Levine’s absences at the administrative level: Luisi will now bear the title of Principal Conductor, although Levine retains the title of Music Director.
