有时候，翻译不需要用单词的原意，可以用它的衍生义。

Chow was a quiet and thoughtful man.
按照字面意思，翻译成“周恩来是一个安静的而且有想法的男人”，读起来就很奇怪。
官方翻译的版本是“周恩来举止优雅、待人体贴”。
这是因为quiet可以表示温和的，恬静的，不易激动的，thoughtful可以表示考虑周到的；体贴的，关心的。
考虑到主语的身份和语言的整体协调，这个翻译就很合适贴切了。
