The home crowd in Shanghai World Aquatic Championships had plenty to celebrate last night, as Zhao Jing put in a great effort to take the gold in the women's 100m backstroke.

American favorite Natalie Coughlin led over the first 50 meters but was caught, and then passed by Zhao over the last half of the race.

Zhao Jing took the 50m gold at the 2009 World Championships and set a world record in the process. Zhao, now adds the 100m title to her resume as the 20 year old staged a strong comeback over the final 20m.

Zhao, would just touch the wall ahead of Coughlin, finishing one-one-hundredth of a second ahead of the American. Zhao's time, 59.05 seconds was a personal best and China's second gold in the pool in Shanghai.
