The principle of striving to develop students' all-round abilities in areas such as morals, intelligence, physical fitness, work and aesthetics has not changed since the founding of New China, but people seem to ignore that nowadays.
自新中国成立以来，努力培养学生德、智、体、美、劳全面发展的宗旨一直都没有改变，但现在人们似乎已经忽略了这个宗旨。
上面的报道中，develop students' all-round abilities 是“培养学生的综合能力”，也就是我们通常所说的“全面发展”，这里的“全面”（all-round）涵盖的范围上文中也提到了，分别是 morals（德）, intelligence（智）, physical fitness（体）, work（劳） and aesthetics（美）五个方面。
All-round 在这里的意思是“全面的，综合的”，对学生来说就是各个方面都有所发展；那么在我们的国家建设中，“全面建设小康社会”就是 to advance China into a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way。而在体育界，all-round athlete 就是“全能运动员”，去年奥运会上杨威拿到的体操“全能冠军”则是 all-round champion/title。
